“Oriki” is influenced by a traditional Yorùbá praise-song I learned in Nigeria; I wanted to adapt its shifting 36-beat cycle to jazz.  Oriki are often sung in praise of kings and princes, but parents also sing family oriki to children to teach respect for elders and ancestors.  In a way, this whole album is an oriki.    “En-Art,” spelled backwards, invokes a nickname of the great musician upon whose composition it is based.   I want my bass clarinet to make great strides through the colossal paths laid by J.C..
