about

“Naak Out” and “Two Can”

These palindromically-linked merengue-jazz compositions are dedicated to three great Dominican saxophonists: Mario Rivera, Carlito Estrada, and Sandy Gabriel. Born in Santo Domingo, Rivera moved to New York City in 1961. There he thrived in major Latin bands such as those led by Tito Rodriguez and Tito Puente. He also played with jazz masters such as Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Haynes, and Sonny Stitt. Rivera’s own group, the Salsa Refugees, presented novel Dominican jazz fusions, as with its use of palos drums, mentioned earlier. Rivera wanted the band to focus on merengue. When Julito Figueroa joined the group, he wanted to play congas, but Rivera asked him to specialize in the tambora. Figueroa took Rivera’s advice to heart, developing a unique style of tambora drumming as a solo improviser’s art. Carlito Estrada and Sandy Gabriel have carried the torch that Rivera lit, cultivating highly developed Dominican jazz styles of their own.
