about

“Merengagá”

Toné Vicioso told me that like most middle-class Latin Americans, his first musical loves were North American forms such as rock and jazz. But listening to jazz pianist McCoy Tyner while driving in the Dominican countryside one day, he encountered a band of musicians performing a Dominican-Haitian music called gagá. Vicioso immediately made a connection between the recorded African-American music in his car and the living African-based expression surrounding him. Toné realized that, as he told me, “there was a Dominican thing …to get into!” Much of the attention of the “Afro-Dominican movement” that he and Duluc spearheaded focused on gagá. Duluc went so far as to live in a Dominican-Haitian community for extensive periods of time, studying this vital sacred tradition and developing into an expressive gagá drummer, singer, and dancer. The folklorist and musician Roldán Mármol dedicated himself to the gagá, influencing the popularization of this music in the urban areas of the Dominican Republic.I am fortunate that Duluc co-composed this “Merengagá” with me. With shared Congolese influences, merengue and gagá share much, and they blend easily with contemporary jazz. Also note Otoniel Nicolas’s drum-set here; like Duluc, Otoniel possesses a wealth of knowledge about traditional music.
