about

“Los saxofones”

In spite of urbanization and modernization, accordion-based merengue remained vital into the twenty-first century. Accordionists and saxophonists perform inspired solos, exuding a wild exuberance that prompted a New York Times article to call their music an “avant-garde improvisational fest in Caribbean disguise.” Featuring merengue master Leo Pimentel on keyboards mimicking the accordion, my version of “Los saxofones” is based on a wonderful interpretation of this piece recorded by accordionist Francisco Ulloa and his saxophonist, Oscar Peña. It originally appeared on my album entitled A Bass Clarinet in Santo Domingo and Detroit (XDOT 25 Records).
