Alto saxophonist Tavito Vásquez is the single most important innovator of Dominican jazz. A native of the Cibao region, he moved to Santo Domingo, the country’s capital as a young man, during the mid-twentieth century,
to work in the vital merengue scene promoted by the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. As he told me, Vásquez injected extended bebop-influenced improvisations into the music: “I revolutionized merengue; this thing of [jazz] improvisation in merengue, I was the first one to do it.” Vásquez’s emotive tone, inventive harmonic sense, and original lines render him a jazz master by any standards. My tribute re-works a piece from his classic LP, Tavito Vásquez y su Merengue-Jazz, which was also interpreted by saxophonist Juan Colon in his brilliant album entitled Con el alma de Tavito. My version of “Con el alma” is dedicated to Darío Estrella, a great Dominican musician and composer who has played a fundamental role in fusing merengue with jazz.
