about

“Rara Indivisible” is based on another traditional Haitian genre.   Rara is a Haitian processional music played during Lent on percussion and one-note trumpets called vaksin or konè.  Since each horn traditionally only plays one pitch, melodies are distributed among players: the result is a glorious cacophony.   My piece approximates this sound in overlapping contrabass clarinets, which dance underneath the electronic bass clarinet.  Rara is also popular in the Dominican Republic, where it is called gagá.  The song’s title alludes to the fact that, in spite of differences, Haiti and the Dominican Republic share much.
