about

“Padre” is dedicated to my paternal lineage.   My father, Robert Austerlitz was born in Romania and came to the U.S. at the age of 15, fleeing the Holocaust.   He bought me my first bass clarinet and his formidable work as a linguist served as a model for my career as an ethnomusicologist.  It is also dedicated to my late spiritual father, the acclaimed Vodou priest, Max Beauvoir. Another “father,” Bill Dixon, suggested I play the bass clarinet when I studied with him at Bennington College.  Also at Bennington, my mentor, Milford Graves, turned me on to world music and world spirituality.    More specifically, this piece grows from my collaborations with the late poet, Michael S. Harper, with whom I often worked; he liked when I called him Padre.   It was originally composed to accompany a set of poems, called The Fret Cycle, that Harper wrote about the foibles of his friend and younger collaborator, yours truly (he affectionately called me Mr. Fret, a tongue-in-cheek reference to my meticulous mind-set).
