about

“Bara Su Wa Yo” is based on a traditional Yorùbá song preserved among Afro-Cubans. It is dedicated to the orisha (spirit) Elegua, the master of auspicious possibility.    He is a close cousin of Papa Legba, whom we met at the beginning of the album. This piece was inspired by drummer Bobby Sanabria's heartfelt versions of similar songs.    This arrangement is for clarinet choir, featuring myself and Isaiah Richardson.   The instrumentation is a nod to yet another mentor, the great multi-instrumentalist J.D. Parran, with whom I’ve had the privilege of playing in his all-clarinet orchestra.
